Indian Mash tun

I have done so many all grain batches without a mash tun.
I used the BIAB method. It works fine, but I always wanted to try out the mash tun ( Like the American homebrewers )

So I finally built my own cooler mash tun.
There are tons of videos online on how to build one.
Here is my Indian version of it.

What you need –

Water Cooler – Get a water cooler online or in the local market. Make sure you get a cooler with a tap, or you will have a hard time drilling a hole through it and making it all water proof. I got a 25 liter cooler which is too big for small batches. I suggest you get a 15 liter cooler for 8 - 10 liter batches.

Plumbing fittings -
  1. 1. SS Teflon hose 3/8in - This is the braided stainless steel hose
  2. SS Hose Clips-Worm ( x2 )
  3. Brass Nipple MHN 1/4in BSP x  3/8in H
  4. Brass Bulkhead 3/8in
  5. Brass Ball valve 3/8in
  6. Brass MHN - 3/8in BSP x 3/8in
  7. Brass FHN - 3/8in BSP x 3/8in H
  8. Silicon tubing to fit the outside brass nipple ( around 1 meter )
  9. 2 steel washers
  10. 2 rubber washers / gaskets
Important - All the sizes above will change depending on the size of the hole in your Cooler.

All the above might look really confusing, but the guy at the plumbing shop will understand all of this stuff.

Where to get the stuff in Pune -

Cooler - Available at shops in Ravivar Peth. Or you can order one online on Snapdeal or ebay.

Plumbing fittings - National Tube suppliers. 365, Raviwar Peth, Pune.

Please buy the cooler first and take it to the plumbing shop, so you know the diameter of the fittings that you need.

If you are not that great with plumbing fittings, I suggest you ask the local plumber to do the fittings, and make sure it does not leak.

These are all the fitting.

You will need a pair of pliers too.

This is how it looks after fitting from outside.

Notice the rubber gaskets, they will prevent any leakage from inside.

Finally, Mash tun in action.

You you really need a mash tun ?

The important question - do you really need this, or the Brew in a Bag is fine ?

I have done a couple of batches with the mash tun, and my efficiency is NOT significantly better than Brew in a Bag. Also the mash tun takes up a lot of space in the house.

But if you want to do bigger batches ( 20 liters ) Brew in a Bag can become very difficult.

  1. Very nice blog. I am just wondering whether I should get a brewing license first and then start brewing. As you know the state where I live (Kerala) has a big issue between liquor and government. Do you know how to get the brewing license? Is it too expensive?

  2. Will anybody clarify my doubts... 1) water coolers are made for cold water. Will the inner wall be able to withstand a temperature around 70*C. 2) What is the function of a SS Teflon, braided hose, to be fixed inside tun. How does it work as strainer.

    1. I agree that water coolers are made for cold water. But they are fine with hot water too. We have all used them without problems.

Once you remove the inner pipe from the SS braided hose, the Ss hose acts like a filter.
It is used to drain out the wort without getting any grain particles in the wort.
